How can I help you today?<br><\/em>I want to disconnect my security system and close my account, please.<br><em>I see. Just so we\u2019re on the same page, you\u2019re saying that you have some issues with your current service, and you want to explore your options?<br><\/em>That\u2019s not what I\u2019m saying. I\u2019ve decided to disconnect my security system and close my account.<br><em>I understand. We know that your needs can change and that you want your services to reflect this. But we appreciate your business, and we hate to lose you. To help you figure out your options, I\u2019d like to ask you a few questions. Okay?<br><\/em>I\u2019m not sure why you need to ask me anything. I just want to cancel.<br><em>It helps me put together a package that meets your budget and your needs.<br><\/em>The price isn\u2019t the problem.<br><em>You see, it helps me to know that. What do you value the most in your current package?<br><\/em>Again, I don\u2019t see why you need to ask this.<br><em>Well, my job is to have a conversation with you about your service.<br><\/em>With all due respect, I don\u2019t think your job involves having a conversation with me at all. I\u2019d just like to cancel my account, please. Is that something you can do? Yes or no?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It soon becomes apparent that (a) the answer is \u201cno\u201d and (b) that he is talking (spoiler) to an AI. Then we discover that the caller isn\u2019t human either, but an algorithm that reflects his dead owner\u2019s tastes and needs. The story ends with the two still going round in circles hundreds of years later.<br>This has an amusing beginning, and becomes pleasingly and quirkily existential later.<br>***+ (Good to Very Good). 2,750 words.<br><br>1.
