Casey Agonistes by Richard McKenna

Casey Agonistes by Richard McKenna (F&SF, September 1958) has a narrator who has just arrived in a Tuberculosis ward for terminal patients and, from the very beginning, he tells his story in a strange, nihilistic and anti-authoritarian voice:

You can’t just plain die. You got to do it by the book.
That’s how come I’m here in this TB ward with nine other recruits. Basic training to die. You do it by stages. First a big ward, you walk around and go out and they call you mister. Then, if you got what it takes, a promotion to this isolation ward and they call you charles. You can’t go nowhere, you meet the masks, and you get the feel of being dead.  p. 182 (The Dark Mind, edited by Damon Knight, 1965)

I found out they called the head doc Uncle Death. The fat nurse was Mama Death. The blond intern was Pink Waldo, the dark one Curly Waldo, and Mary was Mary. Knowing things like that is a kind of password.
They said Curly Waldo was sweet on Mary, but he was a poor Italian. Pink Waldo come of good family and was trying to beat him out. They were pulling for Curly Waldo.  p. 184, Ibid.

We got mucho sack time, training for the long sleep.  p. 185, Ibid.

On the ward the narrator meets a former shipmate called Slop Chute (a sailor who could have come out of the writer’s later mainstream novel The Sand Pebbles), and next to him is Roby who, later on, “doesn’t make it,” i.e. he recovers enough to go back into the main ward in the hospital.
The other significant character in the story is Carnahan, who tells the narrator that he can see an ape:

“He’s there,” Carnahan would say. “Sag your eyes, look out the corners. He won’t be plain at first.
“Just expect him, he’ll come. Don’t want him to do anything. You just feel. He’ll do what’s natural,” he kept telling me.
I got where I could see the ape—Casey, Carnahan called him—in flashes. Then one day Mama Death was chewing out Mary and I saw him plain. He come up behind Mama and—I busted right out laughing.
He looked like a bowlegged man in an ape suit covered with red-brown hair. He grinned and made faces with a mouth full of big yellow teeth and he was furnished like John Keeno himself. I roared.
“Put on your phones so you’ll have an excuse for laughing,” Carnahan whispered. “Only you and me can see him, you know.  p. 186, Ibid.

Eventually all the men in the ward are sharing what appears to be a consensual hallucination and laughing at Casey’s antics, mostly when the medical staff appear on their rounds. Later, however, the ape seems to take on some sort of reality, something that becomes apparent when arrangements are made to move one of the men to a quiet side room to die. At this point Casey appears and apparently causes the head doctor to stagger. Then, when Slop Chute’s condition worsens and the staff try to move him, the ape’s intervention prevents this from happening.
Over the next few days Slop Chute deteriorates and has a series of haemorrhages, which the men clean up to hide from the staff. Finally (spoiler), in the climactic scene, the narrator sees “a deeper shadow high in the dark” start to descend on Slop Chute. Casey fights the darkness and initially manages to push it back up to the ceiling, but it eventually envelops both him and Slop Chute. Slop Chute passes away, and Casey disappears—but reappears on the ward a couple of days later wearing Slop Chute’s grin.
This is an interesting piece—it has a distinctive narrative voice, and the subject matter is very different from the other SF of the time—but I’m not sure that the story ultimately amounts to much. Still, a noteworthy piece for its anti-authoritarian characters and bleak, inverted view of death (which I suspect would have been quite transgressive at the time).

Fiddler’s Green by Richard McKenna

Fiddler’s Green by Richard McKenna (Orbit #2, 1967) is the second of three posthumous stories that were published by Damon Knight in his Orbit anthology series and, off the back of McKenna’s story in the first volume, The Secret Place, I thought I’d have a look—it gets off to a cracking start with a group of men in a lifeboat dying of thirst and contemplating cannibalism:

On the morning of the fifth day Kinross woke knowing that before the sun went down one of them would be eaten. He wondered what it would be like.
All yesterday the eight dungaree- and khaki-clad seamen had wrangled about it in thirst-cracked voices. Eight chance-spared survivors adrift without food or water in a disabled launch, riding the Indian Ocean swells to a sea anchor. The S.S. Ixion, 6,000-ton tramp sneaking contraband explosives to the Reds in Sumatra, had blown up and sunk in ten minutes the night of December 23, 1959.
Fat John Kruger, the radioman, had not gotten off a distress signal. Four days under the vertical sun of Capricorn, off the steamer lanes and a thousand miles from land, no rain and little hope of any, reason enough and time, for dark thinking.
Kinross, lean and wiry in the faded dungarees of an engineer, looked at the others and wondered how it would go. They were in the same general positions as yesterday, still sleeping or pretending to sleep. He looked at the stubbled faces, cracked lips and sunken eyes and he knew how they felt. Skin tight and wooden, tongue stuck to teeth and palate, the dry throat a horror of whistling breath and every cell in the body, clamoring.
Thirst was worse than pain, he thought. Weber’s law for pain. Pain increased as the logarithm of what caused it; a man could keep pace. But thirst was exponential. It went up and up and never stopped. Yesterday they had turned the corner and today something had to give.  p. 37-38

We then get an account of the men’s recent conversations, which include such topics as whether human flesh boiled in seawater absorbs salt or not, and who they should eat. As they quarrel further, the youngest of them, Whelan, thinks he sees green fields in the distance, steps off the boat, and drowns.
After this the tension increases, and they eventually draw lots to see who they are going to kill. The viewpoint character, Kinross, picks the losing coin but, as they are discussing cutting his throat over a bucket to avoid losing any of his blood (“Damn you, Fay, I’m still alive,” Kinross says) one of the other men, Kruger, tells them of another way to get as much fresh water as they want.
Kruger goes on to explain how their reality, which he essentially describes as a consensual hallucination called the “public world,” can be left behind, and that they can go to a place of their own creation, giving the example of a patrol of soldiers lost in the Tibesti highlands of Africa who slipped from one world to another and later returned. Kruger gives other examples of this phenomenon, and his remarks cause much discussion and disbelief. But Kruger persists, saying that they can break through to this other world because, as he puts it, “God is spread pretty thin at 18 south 82 east” (their position).
Eventually, he manages to convince the men to make an attempt, and they lie down and relax and listen to Kruger’s hypnotic voice. Then they make the transition.
All of this takes up the first fifth or so of the story, and it’s an impressive beginning. The next section, where the men investigate the strange world they have arrived in is also quite interesting. Initially it appears that this world is not quite fully formed, and one of their number, Silva, concentrates and tries to make the tree they pick fruit from more “detailed.” Then a grey mist appears and Kruger’s disembodied voice (he is lying unconscious elsewhere) warns Silva to stop. When Silva doesn’t do so he is struck blind. Later, Kinross and Garcia realise that all directions of travel lead back to the (unconscious) Kruger and the stream, and they also realise that they have lost all sense of time, and day or night.
So far, so Unknown Worlds, and this continues when Kruger (whose unconscious body is now in a cave) summons Kinross and tells him he cannot quench his thirst, and that he needs to share Kinross’s body in order to do so. Kruger also says that incorporating Kinross’s worldview will make their reality more stable and detailed.
When Kinross refuses an argument ensues, during which Kruger confesses to setting the bomb on the boat so he would have a chance to break through to this reality. Kinross tells Kruger that he may have made this world but that he isn’t going to help him get all the way into it. Kinross leaves, despite Kruger’s attempt to make him to stay.
The story runs along in this general direction for a bit longer before Kinross and Garcia follow the stream to a pit, where they end up rescuing an Australian woman called Mary who has wandered into their world through another rift. At this point the story becomes very strange, and we start to see various (aboriginal or Dreamtime?) spirits—black dwarves and pearly-gray women—hiding in the undergrowth. Later, a Peruvian wanders into camp and, when Kinross later discusses this with Kruger, they realise that their world is rotating over the Earth, gathering up other susceptible travellers. Kinross also asks Kruger about the spirits:

“I have other questions. What are the black dwarfs and pearly-gray women?”
“Nature spirits, I suppose you could call them. I stripped them from Mary and Bo Bo, husked them off by the millions until only a bare core of nothingness was left. What those two are now I couldn’t describe to you. But the world is partially self-operating and my load is eased.”  p. 78

The rest of the story sees more arrivals, including a climber called Lankenau who, when told what has happened to him, doesn’t want to go back to the real world. The narrative then becomes even more esoteric and mystifying: there is talk of magic rather than the Second Law of Thermodynamics operating in this world, and discussion that the spirits shed by people are unlived experiences or regrets. Later, Kinross stops placing daily sacrifices of fruit on Kruger’s altar, which causes a widespread frost and cold. Then there is a baffling exchange between Kinross and a Spanish-speaking woman which causes Garcia to warn Kinross not to come to the village. Finally, Kinross goes to Kruger’s altar, where he sees headless pigeons and blood, and smashes his fruit offering down hard enough to burst while saying it is “for Mary.” Then all sorts of (possibly magic realist) madness breaks free, which I won’t bother describing because—as it made no sense to me—it may not be pertinent information (although, at one point, a “red-capped mushroom” emerges from the Earth, so maybe that provides a clue, as may the fact that Kinross eventually ends up in our world with a blood-thirst).
This has a great start, interesting middle, and utterly baffling ending,1 but I’m not sure I’d bother with it unless you are a fan of puzzle stories that require multiple readings. And probably a friendly English professor.

The Secret Place by Richard McKenna

The Secret Place by Richard McKenna (Orbit #1, 1966) has as its narrator a geologist called Duard Campbell, one of a team sent to a small town to search for a vein of uranium:

It began in 1931, when a local boy was found dead in the desert near Barker, Oregon. He had with him a sack of gold ore and one thumb-sized crystal of uranium oxide. The crystal ended as a curiosity in a Salt Lake City assay office until, in 1942, it became of strangely great importance. Army agents traced its probable origin to a hundred-square-mile area near Barker.  p. 31

After the team finds nothing (the whole area is overlaid by Miocene lava flows) Campbell is left behind to maintain a skeleton operation to keep the army happy. He is angry and feels betrayed by his boss, and decides he will find the vein to spite him. Then, one night at dinner, Campbell speaks to Old Dave, one of the townsmen, who tells him about a local myth of a lost mine, and how the deceased boy’s sister, Helen, might know something about its whereabouts.
Campbell then hires Helen (who is described in part as “elfin”) as his secretary, and the main part of the story concerns itself with Campbell’s manipulation of her to obtain the information he wants. Initially this proves unsuccessful, but one day he makes a breakthrough:

I was trying the sympathy gambit. I said it was not so bad, being exiled from friends and family, but what I could not stand was the dreary sameness of that search area. Every spot was like every other spot and there was no single, recognizable place in the whole, expanse. It sparked something in her and she roused up at me. “It’s full of just wonderful places,” she said.
“Come out with me in the jeep and show me one,” I challenged.

During this trip, and subsequent ones, Helen tells him of the “fairyland” that she and her brother used to play in, and talks about “big cats” that chase dogs, “shaggy horses with claws, golden birds, camels, witches, elephants and many other creatures,” “the evil magic of a witch or giant,” “sleeping castles,” “gold or jewels,” and “magic eggs” amongst other things. Throughout this Campbell sketches the topology of Helen’s fantasy land (noting that she is remarkably consistent with her descriptions) and later convinces her to show him the “magic eggs,” which turn out to be quartz pebbles that could never have originated in the basalt desert around Barker.
Throughout all this Helen becomes increasingly unhappy and unstable, and there is a crisis point where she says that her brother Owen stole the “treasure” and later died because of her family’s poverty (when he was found he had lacerations of his back consistent with a cougar attack, although there were no such animals in the area). Old Dave eventually intervenes, tells Campbell about the townfolk’s displeasure about Helen’s condition, and states that she needs to go home.
Before he can arrange this Campbell receives a map of the prevolcanic Miocene landscape of the area, and is stunned when he realises it is a point for point copy of the map he has made of Helen’s fairyland. All of a sudden he realises, “The game was real [. . .] All the time the game had been playing me,” and he rushes out to find Helen, only to come across Dave who says she is missing.
Campbell drives out to the desert in the jeep ahead of the search party and, when he finds her, declares his love:

“Wait for me, little sister!” I screamed after her. “I love you, Helen! Wait for me!”
She stopped and crouched and I almost ran over her. I knelt and put my arms around her and then it was on us.
They say in an earthquake, when the direction of up and down tilts and wobbles, people feel a fear that drives them mad if they can not forget it afterward. This was worse. Up and down and here and there and now and then all rushed together. The wind roared through the rock beneath us and the air thickened crushingly above our heads. I know we clung to each other, and we were there for each other while nothing else was and that is all I know, until we were in the jeep and I was guiding it back toward town as headlong as I had come.
Then the world had shape again under a bright sun.  p. 45

There is a minor confrontation with the townsfolk when they get back, but Helen says she is going away with Campbell to be his wife.
A short postscript takes place sixteen years later, where Campbell tells of his professorship and the son they have had. Campbell also says that they don’t have any books of fairy tales in the house, but goes on to quote a cryptic remark from the son:

“You know, Dad, it isn’t only space that’s expanding. Time’s expanding too, and that’s what makes us keep getting farther away from when we used to be.”  p. 47

When I first finished this story (I skimmed it again later) I found it a bit of a muddle to be honest, and wasn’t sure whether “The Secret Place” was located in a different time or in a different reality, or both.1 Part of this was down to expectation (I’d previously read a review—which I can’t now find—of McKenna’s Fiddler’s Green which states that the characters in the story generate their own reality to escape the current one), and part of it was McKenna’s execution of the story itself, which trowels in so much talk of fantasy and magic that it almost drowns out the evidence suggesting the children (and later Campbell and Helen) are actually playing make-believe games in another time: the gold, the uranium, the quartz pebbles, the topology map, and the comment by the son.
I also thought the sudden declaration of love by Campbell a bit unlikely, and have no idea what is happening in the earthquake scene above (is it really a timequake—“now and then all rushed together”—or is it just an emotional climax to the story?)
It’s a very mixed bag and by no means a worthy Nebula winner. Bob Shaw’s Light of Other Days should have won that year, but was probably pipped by this as McKenna had recently died, and the film of his best-selling book, The Sand Pebbles, was in the cinemas.
